Dr Michael Powell Dental Surgeon
BDS (Lond)1983, LDS RCS (Eng) - GDC number: 58132
I qualified at Guys Hospital, London in 1983 and started my career at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Here I gained much experience in dealing with face and jaw injuries and carrying out dental operations such as removing wisdom teeth. I then worked at Newcastle Dental Hospital in a similar field and also in dental prosthetics (dentures).
Before coming to Burnley in 1996 I was an associate in a practice in Dunstable for 10 years and I was also the Marks and Spencer dentist in Dunstable for 3 years.
I enjoy my career today as much as I did when I qualified and get great satisfaction having patients attending regularly who had neglected their teeth previously for many years. I know then that I have earned their trust.
To ensure I keep up to date with new techniques I regularly attend courses in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. I also maintain close links with the Local Dental Committee and The Primary Care Trust. These both work towards standards for "Good Practice" for dental practices in East Lancashire.
Outside dentistry I have a wife, Helen and two children, Rebecca is 19 currently at University in China and James is 16. I enjoy the gym each morning before work (you wouldn't think so but I do !) and in my free time play golf. I am also involved in several Community Service projects and fundraising for charities.
Bridget Doherty
Hygienist/Therpaist
Since qualifying from University of Liverpool I have been practising as a Dental Therapist/Dental Hygienist along side Mike, Helen & their team of dedicated and enthusiastic staff.
As part of the clinical team I have built up a rapport with the patients I treat. I especially enjoy treating children, some of whom are very apprehensive as they undertake dental treatment, in some cases, for the first time. When they leave the surgery smiling, with balloon in hand, I feel a great sense of satisfaction.
I feel privileged to be part of the Briercliffe Road team.
Helen Powell
Practice Manager
I am Mike’s wife, a General Nurse and Midwife. When we bought the practice I only thought I was helping out, 16 years later, I think I am here to stay! I eventually did my Dental Nursing exams in 2001.
I love my job, not so much the mounds of paperwork but the contact with the patients; some of them feel more like friends now. We have seen their children grow up, many of them cavity free which is so satisfying as I feel we really do make a difference. I particularly enjoy looking after our elderly patients.
Julie Platt Practice
Practice Administrator
I have worked at the practice for 15 yrs, I am usually the first person the patient comes into contact with, before they meet our dedicated clinical team. I particularly enjoy putting people at their ease. I feel I have a good rapport with patients old & new.
Dawn Greenwood
Senior Dental Nurse and Oral Health Educator
I feel passionate about my role as a dental nurse. It is a privilege to care for patients on a day to day basis, helping them in many instances overcome anxieties or phobias . I particularly enjoy helping patients to achieve beautiful smiles. It is fantastic to work with such an inspiring team of people.
Jenny Knowles
Senior Dental Nurse
I love my role as a dental nurse, the care nurse system means I can help patients throughout their journey , whether this means helping them overcome phobias or achieving a beautiful new smile. I thoroughly enjoy working with all the team.
Danny Crawford
Trainee Dental Nurse
I’ve been working at the practice since I left school and am now in my second year as a trainee dental nurse. I really enjoy working with Dawn and Jenny as they are both brilliant dental nurses, I aspire to be like both of them, they are very caring with the patients, especially nervous ones.
